In the Turns since AIVAS directed the dragonriders in moving the Red Star and freeing Pern of the menace of Thread, the face of Pern has changed drastically. Despite the lack of Thread to instill fear of death in people’s hearts, Pern has not changed into the peaceful and harmonious place that those who worked with the computer had hoped for. In fact, Pern is in the most turmoil it has been in since Thread first fell thousands of Turns ago. Dragonriders, once the protectors of Pern and highly respected, are now being killed on sight in some areas of Pern and newer colonists have ended up there as well. The rapidly changing Pern has been spiraling downwards and it can all be traced back to four hundred Turns previous.
----
Four hundred Turns ago the turmoil now affect Pern started with a massive event. A comet, streaking through the skies by Pern, smashed into the Red Star. The Red Star’s orbit was altered, the planet itself changed because of the impact that the comet had created by hitting it directly. The people of Pern were frightened, as no one knew exactly what this event foretold for the planet. Hysteria broke loose for a time, and the first faction of Pern to split off was formed. This group called themselves the Followers of AIVAS, and claimed that they were following the ideals set by the computer before its untimely termination in Turns long since past. They proclaimed AIVAS had thought the dragonriders were evil, and thus the world needed to be purged of them. This caused uproar and panic, beginning a division on Pern like one never seen before. Side with the dragonriders and be safe if Thread returned, or become part of the new faction and assert that life without dragonriders could be possible. It tore families apart.
The change did not stop there. One split, as exemplified in history, can cause even more factions to split off, and so more factions on Pern began to split off, proclaiming their ideas. A second group, the Kingdom of Shindrar, took over with hostility. There rise to power involved the slaying of every life, both human and dragon, in Benden Weyr, leaving it an empty shell of what it had been. They, too, proclaimed war on the dragonriders and told any who entered their territory that they would be killed and slain brutally. Half of the factions on Pern now believed that dragonriders had outlived their use and should be slaughtered.
The factions continued to shift, about 200 Turns ago being joined by a mysterious group. Apparently Earth had sent yet more colonists, well, Japan had anyway. These colonists, called the Nihonjin, crash landed on Pern and had no way of getting off, and so they began their own faction in the Eastern Isles of Pern, living there and reverting to their ancient customs, embracing their tradition. They essentially stayed isolated from the rest of Pern, though a few curious souls ventured out and discovered a life outside of this, becoming a part of the greater Pern.
Despite two factions against them, the dragonriders thrived. They set up Weyrs in areas where the people were peaceful and still looked to the dragonriders with respect and honor. They were taken care of here, sheltered, and so the race continued on. New colors, brought on by what could be presumed as changes because of the comet striking as well as the trauma inflicted on dragonkind, sprang up and soon a few new colors graced Pern’s surface. The presence of more clutching dragons was a mystery, but it ensured a life for dragons in the future where so many had been killed. In essence, they enabled the species to survive.
It was with blessing that another faction started that championed the dragonriders and embraced them as part of their society. This faction, the Britine Revolutionaries, brought in some customs from the old American ways that had been on Earth. At least, these were what their ideas seemed to fashion out to be like. They accepted the dragonriders, and thus they had someone to turn to. It was a bright moment in history, and things have started to look up for those who live in the Weyr. All of this has happened in but sixty Turns, and so the power of change is still strong.
This brings you to Dendrary Weyr, a Weyr that exists on the Western Continent and has chosen to become completely neutral to all other factions. It welcomes people from all areas and walks of life as long as they are willing to accept the dragonriders and work hard to make sure that everyone on the Continent has the ability to survive. It is open and friendly to whomever wishes to come, whether it be a Follower of AIVAS disenchanted with the way the group has turned out, or a curious Nihonjin looking for a new life on Pern. Will you be part of the Weyr’s attempt at peace and openness, or will you try to bring chaos to a world already chaotic? The choice is up to you.
