What would become of Pern if, despite all of AIVAS's encouragement and reassurances, Thread began to fall, centuries after the general public were told it would never beseige Pern again? Will Pern be able to survive, with so few dragonriders remaining after that fateful day?
The Turn is now 4058...centuries after Jaxom, Ruth, and the other dragons and riders of Pern executed AIVAS's plan to rid Pern of the deadly silver rain of Thread for all time. Dragonriders had begun to settle into new lifestyles, either remaining in small groups in the Weyrs or branching out into smaller hold-like huts along coastal and plain-type areas. Within the last decade, the dragons had begun to show four unusual colors. These new colors, given the names aurora, obsidian, garnet, and silver, were the beginnings of a warning that no dragonrider could have possibly enterpreted.
On a warmer winter's day in early 4058, the unthinkable occurred. Dragons began pacing, warning their riders that something terrible was about to happen. Other wildlife, from wherries on down to tunnel snakes, scurried to find suitable hiding places, further confusing the dragonriders. It wasn't until the dragons began to order their riders to feed them the long-unused firestone that the riders began to wonder what was going on. It wasn't until a couple of hours later that the riders saw what had agitated their dragons so much; a gray-silver haze along the horizon that they understood from old Records meant only one thing--Thread.
Two months after the tragedy, Pern struggles to maintain a pleasant life. The dragonriders, once thought to be rendered unnecessary, were now in great demand. Enough riders remained after the first few Threadfalls that only three Weyrs could be populated; Ista and High Reaches in the North, and the newly-founded Hazrein Weyr in the South.
