Cynin (Kye-nihn) Weyr was established durng the 'boom' -- a period after the late tenth pass, when the population of dragons exploded. No Weyr had less than three Queens, and every clutch was over thirty eggs. Since the Pass had ended and no Thread would fall for another two-hundred and fifty Turns, people wondered what the dragons were preparing themselves for.
However, contrary to expectations and fears, no threat came. The population had grown, as well, meaning that candidates were certainly not lacking for the many eggs laid, and the Holds too were suffering from being over-crowded.
The obvious solution was to send some of these people away. The Southern continent was chosen, for although there had been much exploration there in the past hundreds of Turns and development following quickly in its path, there was still plenty of space for growth.
One of the Junior Queens from Ista Weyr, called Tyliane of Gold Riioth, and her Weyrmate T'zeph of Bronze Kyreoth, a Wingleader, were sent to head the expedition. They, along with a number of senior members of various Weyrs, started Cynin Weyr.
It was named in honour of a prominant Harper of the day, who had sacrificed his life to save a young holder-girl from drowning. He had been one of Tyliane's closest friends before she had been Searched and the news of his death, not long before she was to leave for the South, was devestating. It seemed like a good idea, though in the hundreds of Turns that were to follow, few would remember this tale.
In its founding years, Cynin Weyr flourished. It grew slowly, taking some of the pressure off of the crowded Northern and older Southern Weyrs like Monaco Bay and Southern itself. The Holds that grew up around it also grew, accepting Holders from the North seeking land of their own. The setting was idyllic, set in a mountainside over a spectacular, lush plain, with rivers cutting into it, and trees and plants growing with ease. In the distance, one could make out the ocean, sparkling cerulean on the horizon. There was only one problem.
Felines.
They were not bad, to start with, but initially the people of Cynin found problems with the dangerous creatures attacking Holders, and then they grew bold enough to attack dragons and riders. Occupied with their own troubles, the people of Cynin did not at first realize what was happening elsewhere in Pern.
In the North, there were terrible food shortages after an extraordinarily dry Turn, and with so many people, from the years of increase, the many failed crops meant that there was not enough for people to eat. Because of the overcrowding, the numbers of Holdless had grown, and with even less than they had had previously, they took to attacking Traders caravans on their way to the Holds or Weyrs, in order to steal food. Many people died, either caught in this conflict or from starvation. When people are hungry, they will do many things that they might not have considered otherwise. They turned against the Dragonriders, seeing that their dragons required much of the scant food to survive, and there might have been outright rebellion, if it weren't for a very strong Weyrwoman. She averted the crisis, but far too many people died in the following long, cold winter, as well as in raids, and it was not easily forgotten. The next year was only slightly better. The numbers of Holdless decreased, because the hardships of the environment made survival difficult even with what they could steal. Because people were living in such close quarters, it was easy for disease to spread, and many fell ill and died. With such conditions, the population slowly began to fall again, until some of the new weyrs and Holds were forced to be abandoned.
Not Cynin--its position with the fertile plains was too valuable to be abandoned, and its role of providing food throughout the famine had been vital.
One hundred and fifty Turns passed, and those awful Turns were slowly forgotten. Cynin continued to do well, despite the problem of the felines. People living in the region simply grew to accept them, and it became ordinary for one to never leave without a weapon of some kind, just in case.
Then, while things on Pern were prospering again and the population of both riders and dragons had become more manageable, new colours began to appear in the dragon clutches. It was inexplicable--nothing, as far as anyone knew, had changed. It started with a golden dragon with streaks of blue on her hide, hatched in Cynin Weyr, and then a strange crimson and gold male hatched at Ista, and a green and brown female at Southern. Nobody quite knew what to make of these new colours. They could only assume that, perhaps, some mutation of a gene had caused the anomalies...People found that these hues were far more common, albeit quite rare still, in the Southern Weyrs, than in the more northern ones like Fort. They also were more likely to hatch from the clutch of another of the mutation colours than a Gold. Eventually, people grew to accept them.
Until the day that the Queens disappeared. One day, they were there, and the proceeding, they had simply vanished. The world panicked.
What would Pern do without Queens? How could it possibly function? Did this mean the end of the race of dragons? Before all doom could be proclaimed, a young rider from Cynin Weyr stepped forward. Her name was Yamitria, and she rode one of the 'new' colours--a Nightflame. She declared that it was ridiculous to panic. After all, Pern still had clutching dragons, in the form of the Skyborns and the Nightflames, so the dragons would not die. It also still had leaders, in the form of the more experienced Riders of the Weyr and even some of the newer ones had natural potential. Why should they not go on as they had before?
Pern concluded that there was no reason they couldn't, but naturally they were still uneasy. If the Queens had disappeared, couldn't the rest of the dragons do so just as easily?
They were forced to put it out of their minds and move on. Cynin Weyr established the first Weyr council, but Yamitria was not a member initially, until she demanded that females be permitted, as opposed to all Bronzeriders. How would anything get done, otherwise?
The rest of the world soon followed their example, and though there was initially a halt to all activity in the frenzy of this mysterious vanishing, things began to function once more.
Now, the second Weyr Council of Cymin has been chosen by the people of the Weyr. The world is no closer to finding out what happened that strange night than they were five Turns ago when it happened, but new powers have come into play that might change things dramatically...and if the people of Pern aren't careful, once again the world could be on the brink of disaster.
Something even worse than the disappearence of the Queens...
