Denleri Weyr
When an unexpected Threadfall strikes Pern in the 10th Pass (hundreds of years after the “Last” Fall) and many people, dragonmen included, die, the extensively smaller Weyrs met and made a decision. They would all move South. They did not have the numbers nor the Clutching-aged Queens to fight this new development. In the South they could grow food even when the Thread went uncharred. This, they reasoned, was the easiest way to go about things.
So all of the inhabitants of the North left it, all but the most rural of people or those too proud or ignorant to want to leave. All of the Dragonmen went, too, all but the younger Queen, 15-year-old Osath and her Rider, Demleri and a few of the more loyal riders. They stayed behind to protect the North as long as they could. At first, Osath laid no queens, but finally, her seventh Clutch produced that coveted Golden Egg.
Thus the Northerners, in their new Weyr that came to be named after their faithful Queenrider, eeked their way through the 10 Pass and into the next Interval, but those who had left never returned. There were dark mutterings about the goings-on with the Southerners, but the mutters stopped muttering or they were never heard from again, and recently there have been a string of natural disasters that some think have not-so-natural origins. When a Queen Wherhandler turns up, washed ashore, the real trouble begins.
