Anne said there were only 5 colors of dragon - Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue, and Green. Ruth was an oddball, and will not be repeated. Not even here.
The storyline of Nurien, however, added a 6th color to the list of dragon hues. The following are descriptions of each dragon.
GOLD --
Gold dragons are the largest of the dragons. They are clutching females. They Impress only heterosexual females. The closer to a Pass it gets, the larger and more numerous their clutches become.
BRONZE --
Bronzes are the largest of the male dragons. They Impress only heterosexual males. They are the ones that generally catch the Golds in their mating flights.
A bronzerider that gains the position of Weyrleader by winning the flight of the Weyrwoman's gold or metallic green, is JR if their is a Weyrleader riding a metallic green. This is because the bronze riding Weyrleader is rotational, and the metallic green riding Weyrleader is not.
METALLIC GREEN --
Metallic Greens were the product of the one and only try Wind Blossom made to replicate her mothers dragons. It worked... almost. The Metallic Greens are clutching females. They are green with a golden sheen over their hide. They Impress regardless of gender and sexual preferrence.
Because they may Impress a male, that male is made a permanent Weyrleader. Much like a Weyrwoman (who gains the position simply by Impressing a gold or metallic green dragon), the male that Impresses a metallic green dragon will not be ousted from the position of Weyrleader.
When the metallic green dragon Impresses a female rider, she is considered a Weyrwoman. The position of senior Weyrwoman, however, is decided the usual way. Whoever was there first, is senior. In the event of two Weyrwomen with unflown dragons, the one that flies first is senior.
BROWN --
Browns are the mid-sized males. They are smaller, by a little bit, than the metallic greens. They are capable of flying a metallic green, making their rider a Weyrleader (rotational, and JR). They Impress regardless of gender.
BLUE --
Blues are the smallest of the male dragons. Their hides range in color from lightest sky to the darkest midnight. They Impress regardless of gender or sexual persuasion.
GREEN --
Greens are the smallest of all the dragons. They are female, but they do not clutch. They are distinguishable from the larger greens not only by size, but their hides are a matte shade of green. They Impress regardless of gender or sexual persuasion.
