Weather
Located in the ranges of the southern continent, south of Drake's Lake and west of the Sea of Azov, Nurien Weyr and Nurien Hold have a fairly temperate climate most of the turn.
In the summer and early into autumn, the weather is hot and arid. It doesn't rain much. To relieve the heat, the Weyr and Holdfolk of Nurien go to the lake to swim and cool off. Some of them may even hitch a ride on a dragon to the sea or the beach if they really want to get away. The ocassional late shower will cool things off, but during the summer those are few and far between.
In late autumn and early winter, the weather begins to cool off and the rains start to become more frequent. It's a relief for the Weyr and Hold. The cooler weather is a great relief from the miserable heat of the summer. The rains are still more warm than cold, and the weather tends to be clear and sunny.
In the middle and late winter, it gets cold. It doesn't snow so much, but it does still rain more often. The skies cloud up and threaten rain or worse almost every day, but it only rains maybe once a sevenday. It's a cold rain, and if it's late enough in the day it sleets. On ocassion it will snow, and the snow may last a few days, but it clears up quick enough. For relief from the unyielding cold, the Weyrfolk and Holderfolk tend to go to the beach to warm up. Not to mention all the tropical fruit and animals they can gather and kill for food turn-round.
At the end of winter, into spring and early summer, the weather is again pleasant and mild. The rains slowly start to become again few and far between, and over the months it starts to get warmer and warmer, building into the uncomfortable heat of full summer.
Kahn Hold, being a bit farther north and closer to the equater, has less extreme weather. They are closer to sub-tropical in climate.
The seasons coincide with those of the Terran southern hemisphere. The weather will be changed in the header.
Geography
Nurien Weyr and Nurien Hold are like the northern six Weyrs. They were cut into the face of the mountain shortly after Landing. They operate on geothermal activity from ancient extinct volcanoes. So each weyr has it's own bathing pool. In the Lower Caverns, there is a communal bathing room, with several seperate baths that are seperated by screens. The water constantly circulates.
The Weyrbowl was cut into a plateau on the top of the mountain. The volcano that made up Honshu was so old that the top had eroded into a flat rocky plain. Stairs were cut to allow walking access to the Bowl. It is large enough to accomodate the Candidates and guests for a Hatching, but the dragons must settle on the surrounding cliffs.
The mountain that contains the Hold and Weyr faces an open plain bordered by gently rolling hills. To the northwest is Drake's Lake, a good half hours' flight from the Weyr. There are several small streams and shallow rivers that flow into a series of small connected lakes within easy walking distance of the Weyr and Hold.
Built into the hills to the north of Drake's Lake, Kahn Hold is not as elaborate as Nurien. It was built some time after Honshu and then abandoned when the settlers fled to the northern continent. It was not completely finished. However, it does have plenty of room for those that live there.
